The world is full of dangerous and destructive people. What makes them

act the way thiPtIt? Are there real devils and demSflo tempt us to

score-or-more synagogues and
stiblach (storefront synagogues)
which dot the Marais — or, more
particularly, the smaller area
within the Marais known as the
"Pletzl." The word is a Yiddish
diminutive of "place," or "plaza"
— the intersection of the broad
Rue de Rivoli and the narrow
Rue Payee.
Visitors to the Marais, and
specifically to the Pletzl, will
alight from the No. 1 metro train
at the St. Paul station, located
at this intersection, will cross
Rivoli and walk two short blocks
up rue Payee to the Rue des
Rosiers, the main street of the
oldest Jewish quarter of Paris.
The Rue des Rosiers, "street
of the rose trees" — which
bloomed there in the Middle
Ages — is abloom these days
and this month with another
crop. Like the Rue Richer, the
main street of Paris' second Jew-
ish quarter, the Rue des Rosiers
is an orchard of humanity,
bustling with stiblach, kosher
restaurants, butchers and bak-
ers, Judaica shops, bookstores
and newsstands displaying a va-
riety of publications in French,
Russian and Yiddish.
The spiritually hungry might
well pause, before they begin
their journey, for morning
prayers at the Agoudas Hake-
hilos Synagogue, 10 Rue Payee.
The modest exterior of the syn-
agogue does not prepare wor-
shippers for the handsome art
nouveau interior — designed in
1913 by Hector Guimard, archi-
tect of many of the fanciful metro
entrances which decorate Paris.
More mundane, visitors might
want to begin their tour of the
Pletzl with a late breakfast, a
block further on, at Jo Golden-
berg's deli and restaurant. The
menu, in French and English —
for Goldenberg's is a "must" stop
for tourists from all over the
world — offers them a multitude
of choices. We go for the tranche

de sauinon fume en beignet —

and a side order of toast.
Parisians still do not know the
bagel, an inexcusable cultural
lag.
The tab on the "lox and" is 70
frances, about $14, and that's
"tres cher," even by restaurant
standards in Paris, where eat-
ing out is even more expensive
than in Manhattan. For the
same 70 francs, we could have
lunched on one of the special,
daily "plats de jour." If it were
boulettes grand'mere — grand-
mother-style meat balls — we
would know it was Friday;
tchoulen, the traditional meat,
barley and vegetable stew,
would tell us it was Saturday.
And the Saturday openings tell
us that Goldenberg's, despite its
menu, is not kosher at all — un-
like the half-dozen other kosher
