Researchers studied 13 inter-
mediate tennis players between
the ages of 45 and 72, all of whom
rated high to very high on maxi-
mal treadmill tests.
Their fitness levels equaled
those of individunis who have run
or jogged two and one-half hours
per week for at least a decade.

Genetics
And Weight

Being overweight doesn't neces-
sarily mean you're unfit.
Researchers at the Cooper In-
stitute for Aerobics Research in
Dallas have concluded that, while
some people are genetically pre-
disposed to carrying more than
the recommended weight, they
can excel on fitness tests.
What's more, their risk of dy-
ing from such weight-related mal-
adies as cardiovascular disease,
high blood pressure and diabetes
appears to be reduced consider-
ably by their commitment to ex-
ercise.
More than 25,000 men were
tested over a period of eight years
by the Cooper Institute investi-
gators, who continued to exam-
ine the weight/fitness/mortality
issue.
