I've had hair transplants. Now I have my own hair
growing naturally where I used to be bald. And it'll

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
You examine the abundance of
abdominal exercise machines,
and you ask yourself: Fad, phe-
nomenon or somewhere in the
middle?
Meanwhile, those flab-fighting
devices may turn out to be as
much of a fixture as that extra
layer of flesh many of us are un-
able to shed.
From infomercials to sporting
goods and department stores,
they're no less abundant these
days than treadmills and dumb-
bells. (And, some critics contend,
no more effective in creating awe-
some abs.)
But if they're what it takes to
get people to exercise — and safe-
ly, to boot — why not?
That was among the conclu-
sions reached by researchers who
evaluated the four best-selling ab
trainers recently in a study to be
published in the March/April is-
sue of the American Council on
Exercise's ACE FitnessMatters
periodical.
Researchers in the department
of kinesiology at California State
University Northridge found no
basic differences in muscle activ-
ity between using abdominal
devices and performing fund-
amentally sound crunches, sans
equipment.
They examined nine men and
10 women, average age 22, who
performed basic crunches, oblique
crunches and reverse abdominal
curls.
`These devices seem to provide
no apparent benefit or detriment
when compared to a properly
performed crunch," said Richard
Cotton, editor of ACE Fitness-
Matters.
"But if any of these devices
serves to motivate an individual
to begin and continue an exercise
program, then they would seem
to have a benefit."
Because of their built-in head-
rests, the devices are designed to
prevent one of the most common
errors people make in perform-
ing abdominal exercises: pulling
on the neck during the move-
ment.
Other frequent mistakes: arch-
ing the back and failing to lift
head, neck and shoulders as one
unit.
The devices evaluated at Cal
State Northridge were Ab Roller
Plus, ABSculptor, AB Trainer
and ABWorks.
Many of those testing the ma-
chines preferred the AB Trainer
by Precise because of the comfort
of the swiveling headrest. Short-
er individuals reported difficulty
