"That is providing the locations and sites pleasing to consumers be- cause it goes with part of the pat- tern established by Circuit City stores, Home Depot, Office Max, and the like. As such, it is especially N appealing and attractive to younger • !onsumers, especially younger women. "Having said that, there is a big difference between buying a toast- er, VCR, stationery, or a computer and buying an automobile," said Mr. Gordon. "If a house is the No. 1 purchase you make, an auto is No. 2. And it is very important. It is not the same as going home with I\ something you know will work with ;very few problems. "With a car, you probably have a trade-in, and you want it valued properly. And you need to know that service goes with it. It is not a cash and carry purchase. "If the traditional dealers are to meet the challenge, they have to provide more customer satisfaction. If they don't, they are in deep trou- ble" said Mr. Gordon. H ' However, Mr. Gordon doesn't think the superstores will take hold in the Detroit area, where there is so much factory employee busi- ness. Eighty percent of Village Ford's business in Dearborn is with Ford employees, buying on com- pany plans. ❑ - Becoming Part Of The Empire A cool $15.7 million changed hands in Cleveland on April 4. That's the day four of Hal Artz's stores, franchises for Lincoln-Mer- cury, Jeep-Eagle, Hyundai and Izuzu, and four of his used car lots became part of the AutoNation em- \ _pire. /-9' In addition to the money, Auto- Nation gave three-year employ- ment contracts to Hal Artz and to his son Philip, a vice president of the company. A leader in Cleveland's Jewish community, Mr. Artz has been a Mercury dealer for 43 years. Just a few hours after the sale was an- nounced, he said he was "proud to \ he a part of the Republic Industries /-iamily. I am looking forward to the positive effect it will have upon our customers and employees." The Artz acquisition is the sec- ond major buy by AutoNation in the Cleveland area. A few months ago, Ed Mullinax, owner of four Mullinax Ford locations in Ohio and Florida, signed on. If the Mullinax name rings a bell with Detroiters, it is because ,sighting the vast Mullinax com- plex in Lorain, Ohio, from the Ohio Turnpike is a sign that travelers have reached the outskirts of Cleveland. ❑ Call today for a FIEF housecall appt. or in-store appt. 341-4570 • ••• • • Brand New 1997 DeVille 43041 W. 7 Mile • Northville/ Mill Floor Loa(led!
