Tamaroff remembered. `Then we
had a falling out, and I went to
work for Leo Adler DeSoto-Ply-
mouth in 1951-52. And then I got
disenchanted, and thought I could
make more money in working for
Pappy's Used Cars on Livernois
in 1952-53.
Finally, Mr. Tamaroff decided
it was time to become the owner
f his own used car dealership,
Marwood Motor Sales, which he
operated from 1954 to 1969.
"From there, I pioneered the
Southfield location. In between, I
had franchises for Volvo, Mazda,
Acura. I pioneered all those prod-
ucts," said Mr. Tamaroff.
"I pioneered this area. I had to
change the ordinances in South-
field. The building project and the
-,ordinances took from 1967 to
1969. I bought the land from four
owners. Tel-12 Mall wasn't even
built. There was nothing here but
trees and farms. The deed said
you couldn't have any pigs or
goats."
Fortunately, it said nothing
about elephants. A massive
pachyderm gracing his property
is arguably Southfield's best-rec-
ognized landmark.
"There was a little cinder-block
house on the property where a guy
was making fly rods. He gaire me
a fly rod, and I still have it. I had
a builder go bankrupt on me. I
had some real headaches, but de-
spite it all, I opened for business
on March 17, 1969."
He started with five acres,
and now has 20. He began with
19 employees. He now has 190.
To date, he's sold more than
100,000 new cars and thousands
of used cars. In addition to sell-
ing massive amounts of Buicks,
Nissans, Hondas, Isuzus and
Dodges, he racked up impressive
figures on Acuras, Opals, Yugos,
Rolls Royces, DeLoreans, and
Avantis.
