condition 1961 Buick Sky-
lark convertible? Marvin
Tamaroff has been looking
for one for his collection for a long
time.
His collection of vintage auto-
mobiles is down to 18 from the 36
he once had. Gone are the
Packards, the Hispano-Suiza, and
his prize-winning 1930 Mercedes.
But what he has left is still quite
impressive...
Gilmore Institute in Kalamazoo.
And then there is the Lalique
china. He is the one of the premier
collectors of Lalique in the world!
Born in Detroit in 1925, Mr.,_/
Tamaroff graduated from Wilbur— \
Wright High School, and went di-
rectly into the U.S. Army, in spe-
cialized training.
"They pulled me out of that,
and put me in the infantry," re-
called Mr. Tamaroff. "I was over-
seas by the time I was 18, and I

the Tamaroff franchises, the cars
are kept in a museum, along with
other automobile-related trea-
sures Mr. Tamaroffhas acquired.
There are ornaments. And rac-
ing trophies. And stunning
European metal mascots. Mr.
Tamaroff once had 1,100 items,
but he donated 520 of them to the

six months in Germany. After
R&R [rest and recuperation], T--/
was discharged in January 1946.
I had dysentery for about a-year-
and-a-half. I had some skin prob-
lems, and lost a couple of teeth.
"Anyway, I went to General
Motors Institute, and graduated
as a mechanical engineer in 1949.
"I got into the new car business

erome Glassman, the
founder of Glassman
Oldsmobile, Saab and
Hyundai, and the father of
George Glassman, started in the
car business on Livernois, at the
corner of Collingwood. The De-
troit riots drove him out in 1967.
The Glassman Oldsmobile
dealership has been in Southfield
for 27 years.
Jerome Glassman is still very
active in the business, although
he spends a lot of time in Flori-
da.
"When he's here, we work well
together," said his son, George.
The younger Glassman joined
the family company 17 years ago.
He's a non-practicing
attorney, a graduate of
the University of De-
troit Law School. He de-
cided that entering the
automobile business
would be a "reasonable
challenge. If I need to
take care of someone's
problems, it might as
well be my own," he
said.
The auto business has been
great, Mr. Glassman said. "Every
day is a different day."
His philosophy is to work hard, -\
and try and lead by example.
He is married to Sherri, and
they have three children:
