reacquired it after the lease ran
\_ out. But that building would also
/— be an ideal site for a Tamaroff
used car superstore, should he
elect to follow that route.
Marvin Tamaroff sold his Acu-
ra franchise to his son Jeffrey,
who also has Buick, Honda and
Nissan franchises, and sold the
building at Eight Mile and Grand
River to the Pep Boys, operators
of regional service centers, an-
other hot new automotive indus-
try development. J.D. Power has
predicted that regional service
centers will supplant auto deal-
ers in handling auto parts and
service. Mr. Tamaroff used to
have a Nissan store at that loca-
tion.
"Everybody builds a good car
today," said Mr. Tamaroff "The
frequency of repairs is really di-
minishing for all makes ... The
warranties are better, but we're
doing less warranty work because
the cars are not failing like they
used to."
Indeed, as automobile business
historians have pointed out, that
was the original purpose of the
auto companies blanketing the
country with dealerships. Cars
were so unreliable that the man-
ufacturers had to have dealers to
service the vehicles in every town.
Local repair service and mainte-
nance were profit centers for fran-
chised dealers.
"Doing warranty work at our
retail rate is like being a customer
ourselves of General Motors. Our
warranties must be 50 percent of
what it was. Everybody's is," said
Mr. Tamaroff.
But not everyone agrees.
George Glassman said, "Quite to
the contrary, it (warranty work)
is up significantly. That's because
we are providing a warranty of
100 percent to all cars if we did
the mechanical work and the car
has less than 60,000 miles."
What about the Best Buy con-
cept? Mr. Tamaroff believes you
can only sell new cars off-the-shelf
/- because "new cars are all alike.
Let's face it, they're all being man-
ufactured with the same dies, the
same parts, and so forth."
Mr. Tamaroff questions why
AutoNation and CarMax want
new car dealerships. When asked
if they could be looking for buy-
ing-power clout like WalMart,
putting in an order for 50,000 cars
at a time, he replied, "No way,
/ Jose. The real problem is that cars
are ordered one by one. Well, no,
take that back. That is unless
they make all the accessories
standard equipment."
Mr. Tamaroff visited a super-
store in Atlanta. "They're great,
they really are. It's like walking
into a department store, because
they're so large.
"I'll tell you what you are going
to need to compete with the su-
perstores: a guy like me who cer-
tifies his used cars.
