It is difficult from this distance
to assess with any precision the
stench that lingers around Prime
Minister Netanyahu in the wake
I\ of the Bar-On affair. The attor-
/ hey general was very clear in as-
serting that while the charges the
police had recommended against
the prime minister did not rise to
the level required for a criminal
indictment, this was not because
they had been examined and dis-
missed; it was, instead, because
the evidence was too thin.
Yet evidence there was, suffi-
>dent to prompt the police to rec-
ommend indictment, sufficient
for the attorney general to speak
openly of "tangible suspicion" of
illegal activity on the prime min-
ister's part.
Mr. Netanyahu's response —
no great surprise — was to hail
the attorney general's report as
a declaration of innocence, which
it is not, and then to launch into
\an attack on those who first
/ brought the sordid affair to pub-
lic light. He blames his troubles
on those who wish to see his gov-
ernment fall.
This, of course, requires him to
attack the police, the press, the
left and nameless others. As if he
did not know before all this that
the Israeli system calls for an at-
torney general of absolute pro-
`bity he now says that he will be
more careful in future appoint-
ments.
