(810) 471-9220 [Mon-Fri call (810) 754-6360] Mr. Opperer, an attorney, says _/ he and friends who know RabbiC—\ J "argue about whom he likes more because he makes every- body feel like [he or she is] his fa- vorite person." For someone who is interest- ed in beginning to observe Shab- bat but feels overwhelmed by all the laws, Mrs. Jacobovitz may suggest that the person set aside one nice outfit or a piece ofjew- r__/ elry to wear only on Saturday, —\ a Shabbat outfit. And the invitation is usually open to eat a Shabbat meal at Rabbi J's house. With nine chil- dren of their own and plenty of guests, the Jacobovitzes can al- ways find room for one more at their Oak Park home. Plus, for anyone who wants to spend an entire Shabbat with an observant _/ family, they will gladly arrange -\ it. "Rabbi J is an exceptional hu- man being; to me, he's like living Torah," says Donald Scharg. "He's warm, never has a bad word to say. If you're not on his observance level, he doesn't con- demn, he doesn't tell you what to do. The way I see it, the more you learn in a nonthreatening way, the more you want to do." Mr. Scharg grew up in Detroit and stopped attending Hebrew school at age 13. Later, he en- rolled his kids at Hillel Day School "only because I didn't want them going to United He- brew Schools. I hated it there, and I didn't learn anything. I wanted them to know more than me, and I knew they couldn't-/ learn it from me. Through Hillel I met some people, and one per- son said he learned through Rab- bi Jacobovitz." Mr. Scharg changed his entire life after learning with Rabbi J. After one lunch-and-learn, he was "hooked." Mr. Scharg, his wife Janice and their family are now shomer Shabbat. They moved from Farmington Hills tizi \ West Bloomfield, to be within walking distance of Shomrey Emunah Ohel Mohed. Ben Waxenberg also changed his life after learning at Machon. He was living in Huntington Woods, too far to walk to Machon. So he and his family moved clos- er, to Oak Park. Machon remains a grass-roots, organization. Rabbi J says it is(\ not funded by a few big mashers — "The bulk of our support comes from the average citizen." The Jewish Federation of Met- ropolitan Detroit does not contribute a cent to Machon pro- grams, he says, except for Ma- chon's Russian outreach division. The Waxenbergs had the brit milah for their second son at, Machon, which Mr. Waxenberk, says "is a place that lends itself toward having simchas. It's not just a learning place, not just a JEWISH FUTURE page 30
