world Jewry," he wrote, 'the state
must be Jewish, not Orthodox."
"We've had enough," said Rab-
bi Spectre, whose brother, Rabbi
Pinchas Spectre, is the leader of
the Conservative movement in Is-
rael, known as Masorti. "It's gone
on and on. There's a lack of re-
spect. These people have no idea
of what pluralism is all about. This
is a very serious situation. I hap-
pen to feel my chancellor is cor-
rect. I believe that the chief
rabbinate in Israel has become a
joke."
For Rabbi David Nelson of Con-
gregation Beth Shalom, the issue
has reached a serious and sad lev-
el.
"When we're divided and frag-
mented, we bring no glory to God's
name," he said. "We have to ad-
mit that there are some very se-
rious problems here. Rabbi
Schorsch is addressing them. He's
my rabbi; he's my leader. I'm glad
he's addressing all of this.
"There are indignities that we
shouldn't be facing. It's been a long
time since Orthodox rabbis have
met with us as equals. With the
rare exception, they have made it
clear they don't live in the same
universe.
"We've been working hard to
create a movement in Israel which
we believe in. All of our beliefs and
convictions are laughed at. Maybe

the UORUSC represents a fringe
element. But there are an awful
lot of people who are gleeful when
they speak."
Rabbi Irwin Groner of Congre-
gation Shaarey Zedek, past na-
tional president of the Rabbinical
Assembly, sees the level of dishar-
mony as being critical at this time.
"There is no respect, no accep-
tance for any other interpretation
other than the Orthodox," he
said. "Our scholars have pointed
out that Israel was created as a
Jewish state, not an Orthodox
state. The great danger we face
now is that this situation will cre-
ate an even higher level of ten-
sion between the Jewry of North
America and Israel, especially
when you realize that 80 percent
of North American Jews are
members of the Conservative or
Reform movements.
"What makes it worse is that
the Orthodox leadership in Is-
rael is not interested in compro-
mise and seeks to impart its will
by coercion or political power.
"I think the crisis will have to
get worse before it gets better,"
said Rabbi Groner. "When the
sense of outrage in the North
American Jewry is communicat-
ed to Israel's leaders, then maybe
they will realize how serious is the
rift between Israel and the ma-
jority of the Diaspora." ❑

In A Holding Pattern

David Tenenbaum is biding his time as the FBI
continues investigating his activities at TACOM.

JULIE EDGAR SENIOR WRITER

avid Tenenbaum is "mak-
ing what he can of his life
when he can't go to work
every day," his attorney
said this week.
Mr. Tenenbaum, 39,
continues to draw his
salary as an engineer at
the U.S. Army Tank Auto-
motive and Armaments
Command in Warren while
the FBI investigates his ac-
tions in sharing intelli-
gence information with
Israeli officers at the base.
In mid-February, after
he was polygraphed for a
routine security upgrade,
Mr. Tenenbaum men-
tioned that he had inad-
vertently passed classified
documents related to mis-
sile and defense vehicle
technology to- Israeli liai-
son officers at the base and
to Reuven Granot of the Israeli
Ministry of Defense. He was
subsequently placed on paid ad-
ministrative leave, and his

Southfield home was searched.
Agents removed boxes of com-
puter files, phone bills and fi-
nancial records from the house.

David Tenenbaum: Still waiting.

Martin Crandall. "All I know is
they took a bunch of documents
out of his home on Feb. 15."
FBI Special Agent Radford
Baker said he is prohibited from
commenting on the status of the
investigation.
Mr. Crandall has advised Mr.
Tenenbaum not to speak pub-
licly about the case. But, he said,
he is confident the FBI will
"reach the right conclusion —
someone misled them into think-
ing [Mr. Tenenbaum] divulged
classified information, which he
did not."
Mr. Tenenbaum, who has
been working part time as an
emergency medical technician,
began working at TACOM 10
years ago. Israelis have been sta-
tioned at the base for a long
time, as have officers from Eu-
ropean countries.
Soon after Mr. Tenenbaum's
actions came to light, the Israeli
press reported that he has been
trying to make aliyah since
1990. As a U.S. Army adminis-
trator, however, he was pre-
vented by U.S. authorities, the
Israeli reports said. ❑

Publicity Deadlines

"There's nothing new at this
moment, because the investiga-
tion is secretive as all federal in-
vestigations are," said attorney

The normal deadline for local news and pub-
licity items is noon Thursday, eight days pri-
or to issue date. The deadline for
