few tools were for making holes
in the matzah.
There there's a Torah from
the 18th century and a variety of
Torah pointers from the 18th and
19th centuries, and also a silk
crown for the Torah and a
Chanukah lamp. Among the
most unusual objects are two
rare etrog containers.
The University of Basel has a
close association with the mu-
seum and over the years has
loaned the museum a 15th cen-
tury leather Torah brought from
Cairo. Also on loan at this time
are letters from 1795, stating
that Jews were to have the same
rights as the French.

One could say
Basel is the
official birthplace
of Israel.

The center of the room is
occupied by a 19th-century
chuppah which is still occasion-
ally loaned to Jewish couples
who want to be married under
this ancient canopy. Also on
display are marriage contracts,
elaborate and handwritten,
and kept behind the glass
cases for both safety and pos-
terity.
One of the reasons for the mu-
seum is framed at the end of the
room. It is a picture of all the
men and women who attended
the first congress when Herzl
had his "dream." This year there
will be celebrations for the 100th
anniversary of this accomplished
vision.
The small unprepossessing
building has about 4,000 visitors
annually from all over the world.
They come to see part of their
Jewish heritage and the re-
markable exhibit, many, in fact,
from Germany.
If you're in Basel, take time to
see the Jewish Museum at Ko-
rnhausegasse, No. 8. ❑
