When he got home, she could see on his face that some- one had hurt him. Next time you decide that someone's not cool enough for you, remember that he's some mother's son." Popularity, trendiness, know- ing how to be cool all the time does not get you far. It gets you noticed, but it doesn't say a damn thing about who you are or where your life will end up. The people who attended Weekend in the Windy City were by-and-large quality Jew- ish singles with dynamic careers and dynamic personalities. I have a lot of respect and admi- ration for individuals who will shell out nearly $400 plus trans- portation costs to position them- selves to meet a Jewish partner. A guy from Florida brought Jenga, that game of TV com- mercial fame where you stack little wooden pieces one on top of another, until it all falls down. He was not gorgeous, but not ugly, and was one of the most outgoing people I've ever met. A friendly guy, he had a constant, —\ bright smile. But because of that game, people took to avoiding him, in fear that he would pull out Jen- ga and start up another round right in front of our eyes. A fair response? No way. Mr. Jenga turned out to be the most talented dancer at the party Saturday night. A dy- namic guy, who — because of Jenga — knew better than the rest of us how to break the ice and get people together. I think he should lead the next singles conference. See, we're all guilty of pre- judging people based on noth- ing. Based on our own weaknesses and insecurities. When I told my mother about the conference, she replied, "Who is really gorgeous? No one. And the people we point to as `gorgeous' are usually movie stars who have been profession- ally done up and then the film has been airbrushed on top of that." Right. Weekend in the Windy City, the first-time Midwest Jewish singles conference jointly spon- sored by the Jewish community centers of St. Louis, Chicago, Milw:lukee and Indianapolis, was wildly successful. It sold out. Rumor had it that although our floor Of the Odyssey cruise ship was full, singles paid to get on another floor of the ship and sneak down to our party. Next time you shrug off a sin- gles conference because, like me, you assume it'll be too dorky for you, think again. And, by the way, I met a really cute guy this weekend ... Hey, you never know. 0
