Mr. Wallenberg is credited
with saving the lives of thou-
sands of Jews at the height
of the war in 1944 when he
was appointed a Swedish diplo-
matic envoy to Hungary. He
used his position to issue thou-
sands of falsified Swedish pass-
ports.

Additionally, he is attributed
with saving about 70,000 Jews
when he threatened a Nazi gen-
eral who intended to bomb the
Budapest ghetto in which the
Jews resided.
After Hungary was occupied
by the Soviet army, Mr. Wal-
lenberg traveled to the Soviet
zone to negotiate the transfer of
Hungarian Jews from Swedish
to Soviet protection. Along with
his driver, he is believed to have
been arrested. Soviet documents
claim that he died in a Soviet
