up racing with each other, chas-
ing the frisbee-catching dogs in
the next field, singing or
wrestling. If focus, in the keep-
your-eye-on-the-ball sense, is
the crux of baseball, these pups
are in big trouble.
But if fun is the purpose, they
are at the top of their game.
They are doing exactly as they
please. They tell awful riddles
during practices (What do you
call a sleeping bull? A bulldoz-
er!). They leave the field at ran-
dom to ask their moms
questions that just can't wait
(how many comes after a bil-
lion?).
They wander off at whim in
search of a drink of water. They
seize every opportunity to roll
in, slide in and savor the dusty
dirt. My son comes out of prac-
tice looking like Pigpen in
Peanuts, only dirtier.
By the time school is over, he
is already far from fresh. Then
he has a snack, bikes with his
buddies, does one page of labo-
rious homework (writing Js, for
instance) and heads out for
baseball practice. No matter
how grubby he is when he ar-
rives, he doubles his grub-quo-
tient while he is there. But he
also doubles his delight, not a
bad payoff for the investment of
a couple of hours.
I also get the feeling that even
if I didn't enjoy ball practice, I'd
have to learn the knack of get-
ting some pleasure from it. Af-
ter all, he's only 7. Looking
forward, I project many more
dusty baseball Tuesdays, even
when he gets too old to build
castles in the outfield. ❑
