Harassment Case Is Sealed Indictments A Threat To Israel's Government A Bloomfield Hills attorney wins $800,000 in a harassment/discrimination case against her former boss. INA FRIEDMAN ISRAEL CORRESPONDENT JULIE EDGAR SENIOR WRITER S haron Rapp, a former in- house attorney at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, has won more than $800,000 in an out-of-court settlement with her former employer. Ms. Rapp, a 13-year employee at the hospital, sued former CEO Jack Whitlow and the hospital for what she alleged was an ongoing campaign of sexual harassment and anti-Semitic discrimination by Mr. Whitlow. She alleged that Mr. Whitlow touched her inap- propriately and made other un- wanted sexual advances, and bragged about his collection of Nazi memorabilia. Mr. Whitlow, 68, retired last fs11 but will continue to receive his an- nual $200,000 salary for three years, according to reports. Ms. Rapp, 42, resigned from POH in October 1995 after an un- favorable performance evaluation and brought her lawsuit against the hospital in February 1996. She was unavailable for com- ment. ❑ Publicity Deadlines The normal deadline for local news and publicity items is noon Thursday, eight days prior to issue date. I sraeli police have recom- mended to Attorney General Elyakim Rubenstein and State Attorney Edna Arbel that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu be indicted for fraud and breach of public trust in the scandal known as the Deri — Bar-On Affair. This comes after the recom- mendation of indictments of Jus- tice Minister Tsachi Hanegbi, Director General of the Prime Minister's Office Avigdor Lieber- man and Member of Knesset Arye Deri. The recommendations were leaked Tuesday, and only Wednesday, as we went to press, did it come out that there was a fourth indictment — Binyamin Netanyahu. MR. ALAN'S SHOES & SPORTSWEAR presents Speculation is that the attor- ney general and state attorney will not issue indictments but will draft a report containing se- vere criticism on how Roni Bar- On was nominated for the post of attorney general. His nomi- Who will desert this sinking ship? nation was withdrawn within days because of allegations about his ties to Mr. Deri, who was facing bribery charges. If there is no indictment, the expectation is that citizens groups will appeal to the High Court of Justice to take action, and the court will have to decide what to do. If there is no indictment, it will become a political story — how the government and Knes- set will react to the severe crit- icisms. If 61 members of Knesset vote to bring the government down, there will be new elections for Knesset and prime minister. But anyone in the governing coalition who votes the govern- ment down puts his own Knes- set seat in jeopardy. If 80 MKs vote the prime min- ister down, only Netanyahu goes. The question is, who will desert this sinking ship? It could stay afloat if the coalition stays together. ❑ At Your SS ervice...
