UJA Participation
Quadruples On Campus

An innovative program at U-M Hillel draws new
students into Jewish communal life.

JULIE WIENERSPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

H

illel student activists at the
University of Michigan
have literally pinpointed
1,000 new United Jewish
Appeal supporters since Janu-
ary.
During the groundbreaking
Half-Shekel Campaign, which
ended this week with over $5,000
raised, every Jewish student on
campus who donated at least $1
to the UJA received a half-maize
and half-blue pin.
The brainchild of U-M Hillel Di-
rector Michael Brooks, the cam-
paign aimed to enlist full
participation among U-M's 6,000
Jewish students and to encourage
more students to actively identi-
fy as Jewish. Although the cam-
paign fell short of its ambitious
goal, more than four times as
many students raised more than
double the amount raised in pre-
vious years, and its organizers are
considering it a success.

"We knew this project wasn't
going to elicit 100 percent par-
ticipation," said U-M senior Ari
Nisman, campaign chair. "We
were working with nothing and
had to write the map for some-
thing that hadn't started."
Mr. Nisman is confident that
with more time for planning, and
with lessons learned from this
year's experience, next year's
campaign will be even stronger.
"This year, we only had 2 1/2
months to run it, and it took time
to build," said Mr. Nisman. "Next
year, we'll have the whole school
year to plan."
According to Rabbi Rich
Kirschen, assistant director at U-
M Hillel, "The campaign raised
an amazing team of activists who
had never been active here.
Next year, there is no doubt in
my mind that we will get the en-
tire population," said Rabbi
Kirschen.
