Israeli youth look to America for popular
culture and, perhaps, for values.

srael is changing, becoming
more American. For the bet-
ter? No one is certain.
Whether Israeli teenagers
are gaining an affinity for Amer-
ican popular culture, and also
American apathy, they are grap-
pling with issues they never be-
fore had to deal with: to join the
army and risk their lives, or sit
back and not fight.
They know if they don't
do it, no one will fight for
them or defend the place
they vehemently call
home. But when friends
barely older than 20 have
died in explosions, ter-
rorist attacks, helicopter
accidents or on the front
lines, the motivation be-
gins to wane.
So the responsibility
for teaching Jewish val-
ues is left to the Israeli
army, known as the Is-
rael Defense Forces
(IDF).

"When ideologies are falling
apart and the kibbutzim are not
the same and youth organiza-
tions are fighting to have 10 chil-
dren [join], without the army
Israel won't exist," according to
Keren Natanzon, a 19-year-old
soldier in the army's education
department.
"When I speak with friends,
they don't know what's better: be
a fighter and maybe die or lose
your best years, or sit bored in an
office."
In the wake of the helicopter
crash last month that killed 73
soldiers — some of whom were
her friends — it's hard for Ms.
Natanzon to advise others to join
the army or to encourage her
male friends to do their best on
the front lines.
