Built in 1270, the synagogue is
said to be Europe's oldest still in
use. Inside, the sanctuary is small,
with a vaulted ceiling and pillars
of iron grillwork supporting the
bimah. ❑

THE JEWISH NEWS

idea to celebrate a seder in the
land of milk and honey.
The weather will be balmy and
beautiful. It is usually between 53
and 69 degrees in Jerusalem; 54-
72 in Tel Aviv. Eilat can go as high
as 87 during the day, and the
swimming is good there and in the
Dead Sea.
Beautiful red, yellow and white
flowers are blooming all over the
country; and spring is in the air.
Passover is vacation time in Is-
rael. Schools close for more than
two weeks. Families take trips.
Some shops close. Hotel and
restaurants spruce up for the fes-
tival of freedom. It is a happy time.
Israelis and visitors from
around the world crowd the ho-
tels to enjoy the swimming pools,
good food and, of course, the seder
— just one in Israel.
Visitors staying at most hotels
can sign up to participate in the
seder. Kosher for Passover dish-
es and silverware are used, and
all the traditional foods and wine
are served. Passover observance
in hotels, restaurants and other
public places are supervised by Is-
rael's religious authorities.
If your hotel should not have a
seder, or if you are staying in an
apartment, you can still partici-
pate. One possibility is to attend
the seder on a kibbutz. Another
possibility is to call the Associa-
tion of Americans and Canadians
in Israel (AACI). There are offices
in most of the major Israeli cities.
The national office is in
Jerusalem; the phone number is
02-661181-5. You can call to ask
to attend a seder in a private
home.
Last year, Israeli radio broad-
cast appeals for citizens to offer
home hospitality on seder night
to new Russian immigrants.
The groceries and supermar-
kets sell kosher for Passover foods
during the holiday. Every con-
tainer of milk, package of cheese,
can of tuna fish has a kosher for
Passover label. Also labeled are
kitchen supplies.
The only negative aspect of vis-
iting Israel during Passover is
that the airfare is high.
If you find yourself sitting at a
seder table in Israel this Passover
and the question is asked, "Why
is this night different from all oth-
er nights?" you can whisper to
yourself, "Because I am at a seder
in Israel." What a special way to
celebrate the holiday. ❑
