he bright pink building on
the corner is a striking sight,
with its baroque design and
soaring tower.
But perhaps its most unusual
feature is the large clock on the
tower. On its face are Hebrew let-
ters instead of numbers, and
hands that move backward in-
stead of forward.
The Jewish Town Hall is just
one of the landmarks in Prague's
famous Jewish Quarter. Others
include the oldest synagogue in
continuing use in Europe, plus a
much-visited cemetery and mu-
seums with extensive collections
of Judaica.
More than 1 million visitors
each year crowd into this compact
area, located within the Old Town
of Prague. I, too, made the Jewish
Quarter my top priority when I
recently visited the capital of the
Czech Republic.
Our tour covered all the high-
lights: We saw exhibits of gleam-
ing silver, beautiful tapestries and
numerous Judaica objects; we vis-
ited an unusual Holocaust memo-

rial and ancient Jewish tomb-
stones.
Along the way, we learned
about the ironic twist of fate
which led to the extraordinary
collection of Judaica we would see
in the museums. Our guide,
Alexa Potter, explained that most
of the items were plundered by
the Nazis from more than 100
Czech Jewish communities. The
Nazis then brought these trea-
sures to Prague for what they
planned to be a museum of an ex-
tinct race, complete with cos-
tumed guides.
That idea, of course, was never
realized. Instead, this extensive
collection is now on exhibit in syn-
agogues converted to museums
which are part of one entity, the
Jewish Museum of Prague.
In the former Maisel Syna-
gogue, we saw ornate Torah
crowns, ceramic pitchers with He-
brew letters and a striking display
of Czech textiles, including Torah
covers, tallit and intricate tapes-
tries.
