in-law, a lover of nature, would
have been spellbound by the
view. Nicole needed to plant
for Mama, me for my dad.
We chose a short pine for
Mama and a tall, strong ceder
sapling for Papa Marty. We
walked for awhile, selecting
exactly the right spot, and put
them next to one another -- the
tall cedar and the short pine.
We dug through stones and
sand, for there's no real dirt in
Israel. I know that some people
go to Israel to kiss the soil. I, in-
stead, dug the earth, sweating
and crying and knowing that
this tree, my father's tree,
would stand forever, a sentry of
history and the future.
Planting was such a small
thing, took so little time, but it
was the highlight of the trip.
We Riffled, we cried; we were
triumphant. The image of
graves was replaced with life
and greenery. A circle had
closed. My father's father, a tai-
lor-scholar, son of a lumber-
man, had taken a path like a
ripped garment, from Latvia to
Palestine to America. And
now, his descendants dug in
the Holy Land to honor their
emotional roots with these two
trees, representing the fullness
of two dear, determined people
who had given us so much. I
turned to Nicole and said, "You
know, Mama wouldn't really
have cared about having a tree
planted for her in Israel, but
she would love this view."
"You bet she does," Nicole
beamed. "I can hear her right
about now turning to Papa Mar-
ty and saying, 'Move over, Mar-
ty; you're blocking my view"'
Too bad, Mama. Like Israel,
