symptoms and terrible pain
kept her awake at night.
The second book relates these
episodes. She describes the
harrowing hospitalization that
followed: the doctors' discussions
about the possibility of breast
cancer (a false alarm) and their
concern that her veins could
not sustain more Ws. She tells
how, uncharacteristically, she
became desperate and discour-
aged.
But she decided it would be
hypocritical if she didn't follow
the advice she had written for
others. She thought less about
her sickness and concentrated
on her morale.
"I knew I would benefit from
company and laughter," she
says. "I requested cheerful
cards, and I was delighted when
visitors brought in ethnic foods.
Everyone knows my appetite.
When friends inquired if there
was anything they could do,
I gave them specific assign-
ments.
"I reasoned that as bad as my
illness was, I would gain addi-
tional material for the new book.
And I did."
Ms. Kron believes she learned
important lessons from her last
hospitalization. "Some people
had told me that I was too
Pollyannish in my first book,
that I tended to say, 'You can do
it. Just find a way.'
"Today I am more realistic. I
know that with a chronic illness
life will always be a roller coast-
er. But I also know there are
coping skills and knowledge
that can help. I have heard from
people in Burley, Idaho; Edina,
Minn., Burnsville, N.C. places
I had never heard of all over the
country. There's a whole world
out there of people with chron-
ic illness, and I'm thrilled
to think that my books offer
ways for them to lead a happi-
er life."

Simplify Your Life

Go against the grain.
Cut down on salt.

Adding salt to your food
could subtract years from
your life. Because in some
people salt contributes to
high blood pressure, a con-
dition that increases your
risk of heart disease.
