My father says he was on the
dating scene 30 years too early.
Back then, women never picked
up the tab, says Dad. Heck, they
didn't even offer.
Well, times have changed.
Standard first-date protocol to-
day dictates that the woman
should definitely offer money, but
the guy should never accept. He
accepts — then no second date.
She fails to offer — perhaps the
same.
I hate this.
The women I know want to be
courted, coveted, pursued. They
want to know that the guy
they're with considers them to be
special, worth planning for.
Whenever I offer to treat a
man to a special night on the
town, I put thought into where
we should eat and how many
courses can include his favorite
foods. I think atmosphere, am-
bience, candles, music. I set the
scene to let him know what scene
it is.
When it comes to dating pro-
tocol, I like the old rules best:
Man opens doors to buildings for
woman (not to the car while she's
still inside — I haven't figured
out how not to feel awkward
waiting).
Man picks a destination, hope-
fully somewhere romantic (Hint:
The paint is not peeling off the
walls, unless that's the style of
the place). Man invites woman
on a date; man pays.
Chivalrous: Marked by hon-
or, courtesy and generosity;
marked by especial courtesy to
women.
You may be a women's libber
to the core — I count myself as a
feminist. But it is especially flat-
tering, heart-warming even,
when my date walks two steps
ahead and opens the door in an-
ticipation of my arrival. I've no-
ticed even male friends grabbing
the door ahead of me and, I must
admit, I don't mind.
Little gifts, an extra five-
minute phone call, a quick hel-
lo kiss on the way in the door, a
card in the mail.
Every woman likes to feel spe-
cial, and every man likes to feel
that the apple-of-his-eye is worth
hot pursuit. The truth is, even
when you say you don't play
games, you do.
So when a guy asks me out, I
expect that he will take me out.
Isn't that the way our parents
did it?
So my dad says he wishes the
rules of dating in his day were
a little more egalitarian, like
now. I say we should revert to
the gentleman-takes-lady-on-
wonderful-date polite protocol of
my dad's day. ❑
