"It has been a worthwhile project, mainly because it teaches the kids the meaning of tzedakah," he said. "They get to see the people in Detroit, people who don't have much." Leonard Baruch, executive director of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, said he is Dr. Mark Diem impressed with Dr. Diem's devotion to caus- es as well as his demeanor. "Dr. Diem is an unusual person in that he is exceedingly compassionate in a qui- et, unobtrusive way," Mr. Baruch said. He said the Christmas Day event with the Salvation Army has strengthened the congregation's ties to the community. "It is exceedingly helpful for the con- gregation, for the community, for the Sal- vation Army and for the people who receive assistance on that day," he said. Wally Klein, another Bloomfield Hills resident, was nominated for her work by the Junior League of Birmingham. Ms. Klein was instrumental in initi- ating First Night/Birmingham, a popu- lar, alcohol-free New Year's Eve celebration for families. Additionally, Ms. Klein has served on the boards of Planned Parenthood, Her- nior League's Heart of Gold nomination committee. "She wasn't a born-and-bred Michigander who had ties all over the place.
