gain to be free from terrorism,"
Mr. Clinton said. "But we do
need to continue the peace
process in an honorable way that
will bring it to an honorable con-
clusion."
Presidential spokesman Mike
McCurry, while declining to pro-
vide any details of the talks, said
that "there is a great deal in
play, and I think the president
gave the prime minister some
serious things to think about" —
a comment that was widely in-
terpreted as an indication of
presidential displeasure.
There were reports that the
president urged M. Netanyahu
to coordinate the next West
Bank withdrawal with the
Palestinian Authority, despite
language in the Hebron agree-
ment saying that the extent of
the three promised redeploy-
ments is up to Israel, and that
he pressed for at least a freeze
on further building in East
Jerusalem.
But that appeal seemed to
have little impact on the Israeli
leader, who angrily defended Is-
rael's right to build new housing
anywhere in its capital city. At
a mid-afternoon news confer-
ence, Mr. Netanyahu said, "I
won't get into details of the con-
versation [about Har Homa], but
it's well known that the United
States has Its positions on the
subject, and we have our posi-
tions and I don't think that will
surprise anyone."
Mr. Netanyahu defended Is-
rael's compliance with the Oslo
accords.
"Israel, which fulfills the Oslo
accords, is accused of violating
it," he said. "The Palestinian
side, which violates the accords,
is credited with keeping it. And
that, I think, is an obstacle to
peace because peace cannot be
built on falsehoods."
He also tore into the press for
what he labeled distorted re-
porting on recent developments.
"You refer to [Har Homa] as
`Arab east Jerusalem,"' he said,
glaring at the assembled re-
porters. "How in heaven's name
can you still refer to this as Arab
land?"
He said that no members of
his entourage would stay in
Washington to meet with a
Palestinian delegation that was
due in Washington at midweek,
and which reportedly will have
met with Mr. Clinton by the end
of the week.
"If you see any of my people
here, they're not engaged in se-
cret negotiations," he said.
"Some of them may be doing
some shopping."
On the pluralism front, Mr.
Netanyahu insisted that "I val-
ue, and the government and peo-
ple of Israel value, the various
denominations of Judaism, in-
