ner on Friday and 7 to 12 dinner
on Saturday.
Dinner is served both inside and
outside, weather permitting ...
with the patio holding 50 or 60.
The restaurant is open Mon-
days, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, 11 a.m.
to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday,
11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The above hours are for every-
one ... not members of a private
country club that doesn't exist.
MUSIC BY Taylor Made is
now Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday evenings at Big Daddy's
on Orchard Lake Road, north of
Maple.
CONGRATS ... to barrister
Henry Baskin ... on his birthday.
ONE OF THE BEST dollar for
dollar values around in casual din-
ing is still at Red Devil on Fenkell,
just east of Greenfield.
The large prime rib ... 32
ounces ... is a complete dinner,
$18.95 ... Steaks, too, are cut by
owner and former butcher Yahia
Mawari ... Top choice 24-ounce
porterhouse, $14.95; 18-ounce
filet, $15.50 ... Both are also com-
plete dinners.
And the veal dishes are big
portions too ... It's a known fact
that Yahia uses only the highest
grade of Provimi at Red Devil ...
in the preparation of piccata,
marsala, parmesan, Tosca, etc.
... at low prices that get second
looks for the large portions of
high-quality meat ... $12.95.
Yahia still has the same
award-winning pizza that con-
tinues to draw raves ... The large
pizza that many pizza operations
sell would be a medium at Red
Devil ... That's how big the large
ones are.
And it's difficult to beat
Yahia's full-bodied minestrone
soup ... and tasty chicken soup.
This past March 14 was 17
years since Yahia signed final
papers to take over the Red Dev-
il from its original owners, the
Bassonetti family, who opened
the 160-seater back in 1954.
Cleanliness is a big thing at
Red Devil ... with its red linen
napkins and white linen table-
cloths.
Quality, quantity and price
are standouts.
TICKETS HAVE GONE so
fast and are almost all sold out
for the Saturday, April 19, 8 p.m.
production of "Curtains Up" by
Temple Beth El.
And so a second show has
been scheduled for the next day,
Sunday, April 20.
Rabbi Daniel Syme will join
Cantor Stephen Dubov in the
Broadway revue, with Rabbi
Syme giving out with his unique
brand of soul.
Call Ellen Goldman for ticket
info, 851-1100 ... ($15 general ad-
mission; $10 seniors and stu-
dents; $50 reserved seating.)
THE SPOTLIGHTS were
there ... limousines too ... and
fancy people ... some in elegant

tux garb ... some in choice duds.
It was the annual Oscars
Night by Excalibur, with atten-
dees enjoying a set meal and
large screen for viewing.
Folks voted on award-getters,
with prizes given to those with
the most correct selections.
This year, Excalibur bucked
other places getting into the act
... and again came out the winner.
FOUND IN MANY sharp
memories ... the Atlantic Gar-
dens and Pacific Gardens Chi-
nese restaurants ... last seen in
the old Central High neighbor-
hood decades ago..
So thanks to our readers who
responded to the column's re-
quest for more information about
them ...calling Norm Prady to
confirm the one location he was
sure of and to tell him the other.
Norm says he now stands to
claim half-victory in his bet with
Burton Isaacs, only worth, he
fears, no more than an egg roll.
Hillard Fealk and Shirl Har-
ris put the Atlantic Gardens on
Linwood between Richton and
Cortland ... Irene Landsman
Sklar said the Pacific Gardens
was on Linwood between Chica-
go Boulevard and Rochester, just
as Norm had thought.
Mort Meisner, with the aid of
older brother Tony, got Atlantic
Gardens right and was close on
Pacific Gardens ... Joe Katz, Ger-
ald Rose and Alan Must were
among others who placed both.
Each restaurant got some mis-
cast votes for being on Dexter
near Elmhurst, site of another
Chinese restaurant.
While a high school student,
Selma Korn could see Atlantic
Gardens across the street as she
waited tables part time in Korn's
Restaurant, run by her parents,
Nathan and Rose Korn ... Korn's
closed in 1952 after 17 years of
serving Jewish-style home cook-
ing and Nathan Korn's own
cheesecake, which Selma says
people traveled great distances
to devour.
Definite information from
written fact came via investment
banker and local history buff
Marc Manson.
His collection of old directories
gave Atlantic Garden's address
and phone number as 12253 Lin-
wood, TOwnsend 8-3075 ... Pa-
cific Garden's was 9715 Linwood,
TYler 4-8028.
Proprietors, according to
Marc's 1941 and 1953 directo-
ries, were Hop Lee and Frank
Lim at Atlantic Gardens ...
George Poy at Pacific Gardens.
Atlantic Garden's 1941 direc-
tory-listed neighbors included
LaFleur Barber and Beauty
Shop, Brownstein Cleaners,
Philip Band Meats and Stewart
Segal Billiards across the street.
Pacific Garden's 1953 neigh-
bors included Victory Florists,
Mrs. Maddox Cake Shop, and
George Posen filling station on
the corner of Rochester. ❑
