I

Inside, Ernest Simons was
waiting to give me a tour. A na-
tive of the city, he is a Holocaust
survivor who returned to live an
active Jewish life. He serves as
president of the trustees of the
Jewish Community of Cologne.
The modern Jewish communi-
ty of Cologne now numbers 3,000,
said Mr. Simons, and is the fifth
largest in Germany (after Berlin,
Frankfurt, Munich and nearby
Dusseldorf).
Because so much of the syna-
gogue was destroyed on Kristall-
nacht, the Cologne government
paid to have it restored, commis-
sioning a Jewish architect, Hel-
mut Goldschmidt. When it was
completed in 1959, this was the
first synagogue in the northern
Rhine to be rebuilt. The gala
rededication was attended by
many dignitaries, including then
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer,
who had once been mayor of
Cologne.
Going upstairs, we first visit-
ed Memorial Hall, a room with
black walls and stained glass
windows. It is a memorial site
for the victims of the Holocaust
— and particularly for the
11,000 Jewish men, women and
children of Cologne who per-
ished. "They died for their belief
during a dark time," reads part
of the inscription on one wall,
which Mr. Simons translated.
Next we went through the
foyer and into the sanctuary it-
self. With 450 seats, its design
includes tall stained glass win-
dows and a soaring domed ceil-
ing. This is where weekly
Shabbat services are held, with
150 worshippers regularly at-
tending.
Upstairs, a small chapel with
80 seats is where daily minyans
are held. A cheerful room next
door was already set with tables
where breakfast is served each
morning after services. ❑
