of people. Friday night, I sat
across from some boys wearing
black hats who had always been

bi. Rumor has it that the rabbi

kiddush.
In one room stood men with
black fur hats and long black
coats. In the other, from women
and gorgeous children. This was
my world? A part of it, at least.
And so Shabbat continued.

were young women who had ei-
ther made aliyah or are contem-
plating doing so, on their journey
from secular to observant.
After dinner, yeshiva bothers
of all ages and levels of obser-
vance poured through the door
to sing zemirot.
Later, back at the Heritage
House, I sat at the kitchen table
with Barb and Allison, talking.
That's what it is: getting to know
other Jews, in the process of get-
ting to know myself as a Jew.
Shabbat morning, a few of us
climbed the stairs of an Old City
apartment building for kiddush
and a D'var Torah at the home

a long afternoon nap, Shalosh
Seudah and Havdalah at the
men's Heritage House, a heart-
felt farewell to women I had
known for only 25 hours.
In this world of immediate
gratification, MTV, fast-paced
lives, there is little time to even
imagine a day of true rest. In
that world in Jerusalem, and
duplicated elsewhere around
the world, all shuts down, seem-
ingly for a chance to think, to
ponder, to explore.
It's not the kind of thing
everyone can digest, nor would
want to. But it gave me a new
outlook on what we call Ju-
daism, that thing we sometimes
