"With New Firm

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Microsoft
Corporation has signed a cooper-
ation agreement with Petah Tik-
va-based software developer
BackWeb Technologies to expand
broadcast channel and delivery
options for the American compa-
ny's Internet Explorer 4.0 version,
\ 2scheduled for release this sum-
mer.
Out of 19 companies around the
world offering such Internet prod-
ucts, Microsoft chose the only Is-
raeli company in the field.
BackWeb, established in 1995
by BRM and managed by Eli
Bareket, allows Internet users to
subscribe free to "channels" of in-
formation that appear on the
screen while they're working and
are clicked if the user wants to ac-
cess them.
Instead of having to seek out
sites on the Internet, ones they
have selected automatically ap-
pear periodically as icons on the
screen when new information is
available.
The agreement lays the ground-
work for the joint creation of a
/ BackWeb-based Microsoft Inter-
net Explorer channel.

Discuss Gas Deal

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Israel In-
frastructure Minister Ariel Sharon
and RAO Gazprom, the world's
largest gas producer, are to begin
negotiating a possible Israeli gas
purchase from Russia, Israel
Prime Minister's Office deputy
spokesman Ofir Akoonis said.
A deal was discussed during the
Moscow meeting between Russ-
ian Prime Minister Victor Cher-
nomyrdin and Prime Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu.
"This is just another possibili-
ty in the basket," said Mr.
Sharon's spokesman Ra'anan
Gissin. "We are not cancelling our
interest in Egypt and Qatar. Rus-
sia could be either an alternative
or an additional supplier."
Negotiations are continuing be-
tween Israel and Egypt for the
supply of natural gas via a land or
sea pipeline.
However, the Israeli govern-
ment fears total dependency on
2 one source, particularly given po-
litical tensions in the region, and
is examining several alternative
sources, including Turkey, Russia
and Turkmenistan.
The various proposals to bring
gas from such distances are de-
scribed by industry experts as not
viable, either financially or logis-
tically. However, executives at
Merhav, an Israeli company in- .
vested in Turkmenistan, believe
it is possible for a pipeline to be
constructed to Israel from that
country, which has one of the
world's largest gas reserves.
