Are you yearning to attend this
weekend's policy conference of the
American Israel Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC) but can't af-
ford the ticket to Washington?
Then hitch a ride on the Infor-
mation Superhighway. Through
the miracles of computer net-
working, you'll be able to watch
n the likes of Israeli Prime Minister
/—
Binyamin Netanyahu and U.S.
Vice President Al Gore, and even
participate in some of the discus-
sions.
For the second year, AIPAC will
use "Webcasting" technology to al-
low people around the world to lit-
erally sit in at the major sessions
and participate in many activities
without leaving home.
AIPAC's "CyberCenter for Pro-
/-
Israel Activism" has pioneered the
use of the World Wide Web for po:
litical activism. At the AIPAC site,
pro-Israel activists can read the
group's latest position papers, or
get instructions on how to contact
their legislators on the day's hot
issues — an increasingly impor-
tant element in AIPAC's leg-
endary grass-roots network.
What does it take? Surprising-
ly little: a 28.8 baud modem and a
pedestrian 486 computer with
multimedia capabilities, and
you're in business. The AIPAC
Web site offers detailed instruc-
tions — and a link to VDOlive, an
Israeli high-tech company that
supplies the software you'll need.
Many sessions also will be broad-
cast via "real audio," allowing Web
/- visitors to hear the speeches.
On Monday, visitors can par-
ticipate in a Middle East "town
hall" featuring U.S. Special Envoy
Dennis Ross and Dore Gold, a top
adviser to Mr. Netanyahu. The
panelists will take e-mailed ques-
tions and some real-time questions
from on-line visitors.
On Tuesday, delegates to the
Washington meeting will fan out
across Capitol Hill to lobby on is-
sues such as foreign aid. Visitors
to the Web site will be encouraged
to participate via e-mail, using
AIPAC's on-line congressional di-
rectory.
AIPAC will feature its very own
"cyber cafe" at the conference,
which will allow real-world visi-
tors to join Web participants.

AIPAC site at http://www.aipac.
org to see how the Internet is
changing the face of Jewish ac-
tivism.
A nod of the old trackball to the
Jewish COMMunity Online, the
pioneering all-in-one Jewish ser-
vice on America Online. JCOMM
was named one of the top 50 sites
on AOL. JCOMM joined the New
\--) York Times and ABC television in
winning AOL's "Members' Choice"
award, selected by AOL's 8 million
users.
