- Barbara Barrie: "My character is a pioneer
as far as feminism is concerned."

writer and director, is dyslexic.
Barrie's Jewish heritage comes
across through organizational in-
terests. Besides being a con-
tributing member of Peace Now,
she is forming a group with Glo-
ria Steinem and Letty Pogrebin
to help abused women in Israel.
`Tm very active, travel around
the world and do everything I did
before I was ill, maybe even
more," said Barrie, who keeps in
touch with Michigan relatives,
Steven and Deena Borzak. "The
"Suddenly Susan" character gets
shaped more and more like me as
we go along.
"I like the "Suddenly Susan"
ensemble. The actors are terrific,
and we're going in a direction
where we deal with real problems
so that it's not just fluff.
"In one segment, Susan finds
out that both of her parents might
be having affairs and gets upset
because that kind of revelation
certainly is hard to take. Although
it's still a funny episode, it's also
based in reality, so I loved the
whole idea of it."
Barrie feels close to the younger
set appearing on the show. Joined
by her daughter, Jane Harnick,
an actress and writer, she helped
cast member Kathy Griffin move
into a new house, spending the
day unpacking and arranging.
Barrie has gotten to know
Shields' fiance, tennis great An-
dre Agassi, during his visits to the
set,
"He's very sweet, just the way
she is," Barrie said. `They're both
very personable."
In sync with Agassi, tennis is
the big sport for Barrie's family.
They frequently play with friends
living near their New York home.
`Tve said no work this summer
because it's been a very hard year
working on the series and writ-
ing the book," Barrie said. "My
husband and I are going to
Ecuador in May and on a bicycle
trip to France in June." ❑

"Suddenly Susan" can be seen
Thursdays on NBC.
