Mother's "beets" the pack in borscht taste test.

roons. This week's rating
on borscht is the first in-
stallment.

y association with beets
is not a pleasant one.
One day, as a 6-year-
old in the charge of my
grandmother, I asked her for
something to eat. She took me
down the hallway to her kitchen
where she pulled a dish from the
refrigerator. With a satisfied look
on her face, she spooned a few
beets on to a plate and placed it in
front of me.
I didn't know what to do. I had
never seen these cold purple
things before. I looked at her skep-
tically. She goaded me into trying
them, promising that I would like
them.
