eing single and Jewish in
the '90s can be a "formida-
ble challenge," according to
Jeffrey Zaslow. But it
doesn't have to lead to loneliness
and heartache. The West Bloom-
field native and syndicated advice
columnist will offer words of wis-
dom on Saturday, April 12, at
"Weekend in the Windy City."
Co-sponsored by the Jewish
community centers in Indi-
anapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago
and St. Louis, the Apri111-13 con-
ference presents an opportunity
for singles from across the coun-
try to meet. For $380 plus airfare,
you get a room at the Hyatt Re-
gency Chicago on the Riverwalk,
kosher meals, a Saturday night
boat cruise, optional religious ser-
vices and schmoozing.
The response has surpassed ex-
pectations, according to Marsha
Landau, singles coordinator at the
Indianapolis JCC. After planning
a convention for 150 Reform sin-
gles in Indianapolis last year, Ms.
Landau hatched the idea of an
event for singles from various
Jewish backgrounds and cities,
planned by JCCs.

of adult American
Jews have never

"We're having singles from all
over — New York, Washington,
Houston, Iowa. We sent out 8,000-
10,000 brochures, so it's definite-
ly national," she says. "We got a
call from a woman in Detroit
whose sons are coming in from
New Zealand."
Mr. Zaslow plans to "give a mil-
lion tips for Jewish singles, talk
about the sort of issues that Jew-
ish singles have with each other
and with the dating process and
being Jewish and how we stereo-
type each other often. I tell a lot
of jokes, too," says the man who
replaced Ann Landers at the
Chicago Sun-Times.
About 22 percent of adult
American Jews have never been
married, he says, 7.5 percent are
divorced and 7 percent are wid-
owed.
`There are more Jewish singles
than there are [singles] of any
other religion in America," he
says.
Why? For one, "Jews are often

singles.
better educated, so they wait
longer to get married." Another
is that "more homosexuals are
staying single rather than mar-
rying."
Mr. Zaslow will also share his
own take-off of the infamous dat-
ing advice book by Ellen Fein and
Sherrie Schneider, The Rules:
Rule: Don't talk to a man first,
don't ask him to dance.
Jewish Rule: Talk to a man's
mother first; if she likes you she'll
tell him, "Morty, ask her to
dance."
Rule: Don't open up too fast.
Jewish Rule: He already knows
about you from your mutual
friends, everyone at the swim
club, his ex-girlfriend — open up
as fast as you like, it doesn't mat-
ter.
Rule: Don't be afraid to walk
away if it's not working.
Jewish Rule: If you go to a deli
and your date orders pastrami on
white bread with mayo, say "Have
a nice life."
But Mr. Zaslow also offers
some serious rules such as "don't
date non-Jews. That's rule No. 1
because if what you want is a
Jewish life and family, you're
wasting your time.
"Make your life as Jewish as
possible. If you want to join a
health club, don't join Vic Tanny,
join the JCC. Be willing to look
out-of-town. A lot of people in De-
troit [say] they know everybody.
Chicago is only $83 away." ❑
