in the sale of Sinai to the secular
health-care organization.
"I feel very protective of the
building," she said.
DMC, however, recently ap-
pointed Ms. Kellman to sit on the
board of the clinical women's
health center, an entity that con-
trols the use of the building
named in her honor. In addition,
she has heard so many stories of
women who have received treat-
ment at the women's facility that
it no longer matters to her
whether it is a Jewish institution
or a secular one that controls it.
"I feel good giving money
where I can see what good it
does," she said.
"It has nothing to do with re-
ligion," she said. "I didn't do it for
that reason."
Neither did the Rose family.
When Edward Rose died, he des-
ignated that his heirs give a cer-
tain amount of his estate to a
worthy charity, said his son Irv-
ing Rose.
The family eventually com-
mitted some of the money to
Sinai, in part because of its affil-
iation with the Jewish commu-
nity. The Edward and Lillian
Rose Imaging Center on North-
western Highway was named in
acknowledgement of the gift.
But the Jewish aspect of the
gift was not as important to the
family as providing services for
the greater community. In that
vein, the family also gave to
William Beaumont Hospital,
which named a cancer center for
the couple.
"More importantly we wanted
the money to go to a medical pur-
pose," he said. 111

The stamp of Jewish
influence was felt everywhere.
Colonial leaders debated whether
Hebrew might replace English as our
formal language. Inscribed on the
Liberty Bell that tolled freedom for
the country are words from Hebrew
scriptures: "Proclaim liberty
throughout the land unto all the
inhabitants thereof."

fathers' admiration for the Israelite model: 2 centuries of
self-rule under the Judges, the world's first major
experiment in national autonomy and democracy.
Hebrew bibles and other tracts were published here, and
Jewish studies were widely taught. Hebrew words are
written into the university emblems of Columbia, Yale
and Dartmouth. Truly, the founding . of our republic
reached deeply into Jewish history for inspiration and
reward.

During the early 18th Century, devout and secular
Christians in America paid homage to the Bible's moral
and ethical values as bedrocks for the budding state. A
century before, the Puritan Pilgrims laid the foundations
for such respect in their reverence for the "Children of
Abraham" with whom they identified.

Jewish families had arrived in New Amsterdam
years ahead of ancestors of George Washington and other
colonists fleeing English oppression--many of whom
related their plight to that of tyrannized Jews. Little
wonder why the "people of the book" were held in high
esteem, although they numbered under 2,000 in a pre-
Revolution population of 2Y2 million.
