Andover Wins
Swim Title

Farber Dominates
Age-Group Meet

Co-captains Lance Asti, Cary Be-
len and Jeremy Fogel led the
Bloomfield Hills Andover boys
swimming and diving team to
this year's Class B state cham-
pionship at Eastern Michigan
University. It was the eighth
consecutive Class A or Class B
state title for the Barons.

Nine-year-old Shayna Farber of
West Bloomfield took four first
places, two seconds and three
thirds at the Michigan Swim-
ming ABC Festival March 15-16
at Livonia Churchill High School.
Swimming in the 10-and-un-
der division, Farber won the 200
yard freestyle (2:35.69), 100
freestyle (1:10.52), 50 breast-
stroke (44.73), and 50 freestyle
(32.56).
She finished second in the 200
individual medley (2:58.13) and
50 butterfly (37.95), and third in
the 100 individual medley
(1:22.41), 100 breaststroke
(1:40.52) and 100 backstroke
(1:25.75).
Shayna is a student at Eagle
Elementary School and swims
year-round for the Clarenceville
Swim Club.

Relay performances keyed the
victory. Co-captains Fogel and
Asti helped win the medley re-
lay with teammates Sebastian
Popa and Jack Crowther in
1:36.51. In the 200-free relay, Be-
len, Fogel, Crowther and Popa
won in 1:29.33.
Brian Lyngaas helped the
Barons with a ninth place finish
in one-meter diving.

Two Qualify
For Maccabiah

Detroiters Susie Jacob and Norm
Pappas have qualified for the
U.S. masters tennis team par-
ticipating in the World Mac-
cabiah Games in Israel in July.
Jacob won one of six spots in
the women's 45-49-year-old
bracket at a qualifying tourna-
ment in San Diego. Pappas won
one of six spots in the men's 50-
54 bracket at a qualifying tour-
nament in Sarasota, Fla.
Detroit B'nai B'rith bowlers
Gary Klinger, Mort Friedman,
Phil Horowitz, Howard Waxer
and Keith Kingston are compet-
ing for spots on the U.S. bowling
team. The final qualifying tour-
nament will be held in Colum-
bus, Ohio.
Competing for spots on the
Canadian Maccabiah bowling
team are B'nai B'rith bowlers
Jack Blaine and David Shan-
baum.

times.
Emily Kraft, age 11, compet-
ed in eight events, with her best
time in the 50 free at 33.50. First-
time swimmers Danielle
Borovoy, 9, had a 38.5 and
Chucky Wasson, 9, 48.3.
Jack Oliver, 9, took first in his
age group with a 48.150 breast-
stroke. Jillian Rosati, 7, swam
the 25 free in 25.2 and Jackie
Tillman, 7, had a 26.9.
Shira Borzak, 7, finished third
in the 25 breaststroke, 27.1.
Lori Shapiro, 11, swam the 50
free in 44.01; Mariel Rosati, 9, 50
breaststroke, 56.04; Erica Lewis,
11, 50 backstroke, 44.45.
Jenna Kraft, 10, swam seven
events, including a first place fin-
ish in the 100 free, 1:13.3.
Eugene Shatsman, 11, took
fifth in the 50 breasstroke, 47.9,
and Kent Kim, 11, finished ninth
