\--re actually in the Israeli army
for 2-3 weeks, subject to its reg-
ulations, its housing and its food,"
says Ms. Spiegel. The base can
change, depending on the nature
of the volunteers. Some are more
rugged, while others are quite
comfortable.
That said, the food is kosher
and plentiful. The volunteers
come from various, interesting
`->backgrounds and sometimes you
actually get to commiserate with
the soldiers.
The work can be "menial, bor-
ing, sometimes difficult," says Ms.
Spiegel. So why does she do it?
"Because you want to feel you are
making a contribution. You get a
much better understanding of the
role of the army in the lives of the
young people here. If you're lucky,
• you get to see different parts of
• the country that may be off-lim-
its to tourists. As corny as it
sounds, I like knowing I really
am helping."

Research gave
him a future
Although the work is rewarding,
conditions in the army barracks are not
the same as five-star hotels.
\-) American volunteers pay a $65
registration fee plus the cost of
their plane ticket, which is sub-
sidized by the Israeli army. The
work they do saves the IDF ap-
proximately $1,000 per day, ac-
cording to Moshe Biton, Sar-El's
commander.
Does the army really need the
help of volunteers they must
train and guide? Gen. Davidi sees
/- 'the role of Sar-El as helping Jew-
ish continuity.
"This is because a visit to Is-
rael, according to research done
by the Jewish Agency, is more
important in terms of Jewish
identification," especially if done
in an atmosphere of contributing
to the welfare of the Jewish state,
he says.
Most volunteers replace re-
•
/ servists, and they are never
placed in a combat situation. Sta-
tioned on a base outside Safed,
the Kabbalah city in the moun-
tains of the Galilee, we built el-
ements for bunkers that will
eventually be placed on the Syr-
ian and Lebanese borders —
most definitely helping secure the
Jewish state.
Volunteers also help out on
•
/ tank bases, cleaning and repair-
ing engines and other parts, and
on medical bases, packing supply
kits, some of which were used in
an emergency visit to Rwanda.
