lished at the beginning "fizzled"
by year's end, he said.
"This thing has potential as
long as [the organizers] redefine
the goals and go about it a dif-
ferent way. If [this program] is
about grooming new Jewish lead-
ers [or building ties with the city
of Detroit], then you need to de-
fine it that way," said Mr. Op-
perer.
The New Leaders Project was
inspired by a Los Angeles pro-
gram, which NJCRAC wanted to
expand. Funding was supplied to
launch the idea in Detroit, Flint,
Boston and Indianapolis.
The program began in Detroit
last February, with a combined
Flint-Detroit group retreat at
Camp Tamarack's Butzel Con-
ference Center. Detroit's project
is a joint effort of the Federation
and the Jewish Community
Council.
Rabbi Shmuel Irons plans to tell all at a special
lecture series at the Jewish Community Center.

T
he Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center will
host a self-improvement lec-
ture series by Rabbi Shmuel
Irons. The monthly series will
start Tuesday, April 1, and con-
tinue through the end of 1997.
Sounding a bit like the cover of
a women's magazine, the eight-
part series, titled "Jewish Secrets,"
will feature topics induding "How
To Find And Keep Your Soul
Mate," "How To Become Wealthy"
and "How To Boost Your IQ."
Rabbi Irons, of the Kollel Insti-
tute in Oak Park, said he is excit-
ed to lead a series featuring "very
human issues."
"[These topics] deal with hu-
man issues that normally one
would not go to a rabbi for," he
said. "One would go to a social
worker or psychologist."
Rabbi Irons wants to take
everyday subjects and put a Jew-
ish spin on them by teaching what
the rabbinic texts have to say
about daily interactions.
However, he said people tend
to think of Judaism in terms of
what they learned in religious
school: Hebrew language, prayer
and rituals. This feeling, he said,
leads some individuals to shy
away from seeking Jewish an-
swers to life's questions.
"There is a wealth of Jewish in-
formation from talmudic sources
and commentary, but for most
people in the Jewish community
this information is inaccessible,"
he said. "I hope to give them ac-
cess to that wisdom."
Series topics include "How To

Stop Worrying," "How to Touch
Your Dreams," "How To Become
Well Liked And Respected," "How
To Grow Older Without Getting
Old," "How To Manage Anger"
and "How to Enjoy Life's Simple
Pleasures."
The series is sponsored by Fred
Ferber. "The world is moving so
fast and we have so little time for
ourselves," Mr. Ferber said. "I
