Expanding Its Reach Hillel of Metro Detroit opens doors to Jewish students at Eastern Michigan University. LYNNE MEREDITH COHN STAFF WRITER H illel of Metro Detroit is expanding its reach into Washtenaw County, adding the Jewish students at Eastern Michigan University to its roster of campus con- stituents. Previously, EMU's Jewish student population of between 900 and 1,500 could look to Ann Arbor's U-M Hillel for program- ming, but a Detroit Jewish Fed- eration study found that Eastern students actually have more in common with their peers at De- troit area colleges, says Miriam Starkman, HMD director. Through the end of December, they were supervised by the U- M Hillel because of proximity, says Taron Tachman, the new HMD program director for East- ern. Jordana Weiss, a planning as- sociate at Federation, says Fed- eration gave HMD $122,375 for 1996-97. Last month, it gave a special grant to HMD to begin working with Eastern this se- mester. New allocations will be made in May and June, says Ms. Weiss, at which time HMD will receive a $45,000 annual increase to include Eastern in its full-year operating budget. The additional funds will en- able HMD to employ a program director specifically for Eastern and to provide services to the stu- dents on the Ypsilanti campus. `There's more overlap with Hil- lel of Metro Detroit than with Uni- versity of Michigan Hillel. Approximately one-third of [Jew- ish EMU students] are com- muters from the Detroit area, actually live in Detroit. About one- third come home on weekends, even if they live up there, and the remaining one-third stay up there," says Ms. Starkman. The study was conducted by Mr. Tach- man while he was working for Federation on a Project STaR in- ternship. Coupon Mr. Tachman, 26, grew up in Grand Rapids and received an un- dergraduate degree in psycholo- gy from Michigan State. He has lived in Israel with Project Otzma and worked for the College Edu- cation Department of the Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions, planning its 1995 college convention. He is currently a sec- ond-year Project STaR, graduate student at U-M, expecting a si- multaneous master's degree in so- cial work and certificate in Jewish communal service this May. Previously, EMU had a small group for its Jewish students "at the level of a club," says Mr. Tach- man. He wants to make Jewish campus involvement "bigger and better, new and exciting and the place to be." He will work to build up student leadership, Jewish in- volvement and work with the Yp- silanti Jewish community. Mr. Tachman is in the process of meeting new students and plan- ning his first program, 8:30 p.m. Taron Tachman: New HMD program director at Eastern. Thursday, April 17, when a co- median and a cappella group will appear in the ballroom of the McKenny Union. The cost is $2. "Obviously, serving college stu- dents and the idea of Hillel foun- dations for Jewish campus life is a very big priority for us," says Federation's Ms. Weiss. "That's why we're starting to look at cam- puses that are under-served, to make sure they're getting services that other college campuses are. There are a lot of Jewish students at Eastern, and I think the num- ber is increasing. It's really im- portant for us to realize that even campuses that have a smaller con- centration of Jewish students need to be served."
