A New Unity Akiva is honoring the head of the Detroit Medical Center for his efforts to maintain Sinai Hospital's Jewish heart. EMILY SENDLER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS F 'David Campbell: Akiva honoree. or 33 years, Akiva Hebrew Day School has recognized Jewish individuals who have made outstanding contribu- tions to the Jewish community. This year, Akiva is switching gears. On April 6, the school will hon- or David Campbell, CEO of the De- troit Medical Center, with which Sinai Hospital recently merged. He will accept the award April 6 at Southfield's Plaza Hotel. Stuart Teger, president of Aki- va, said Mr. Campbell's selection was based on the sensitive way he has handled the Sinai-DMC merg- er. Instead of treating it with the coldness associated with such busi- ness transactions, he has made an obvious effort to maintain Sinai's Jewish identity within the larger context of the DMC, Mr. Teger said. Mr. Campbell said his speech at the banquet will be his first to a Jewish organization, and it will be the first step of many the DMC INVENTORY REDUCTION SALE • 2 DAYS ONLY! SPECIAL SALE HOURS - FRI 9-6 & SAT 10.6 will be taking to create a link be- tween health care and communi- ty service. "I'm pleased with the opportu- nity to introduce ourselves and welcome the opportunity to work within the broader Jewish com- munity," he said. Mr. Campbell also plans to dis- cuss the necessity of the link be- tween health care and community service and the importance of ed- ucation to the community. He noted that DMC is taking steps to preserve and integrate Jewish traditions and religious practices. Thus far, 35 people from the Jewish community have been added to both corporate and advi- sory boards of the DMC. The DMC plans to continue and expand the kosher kitchen and rabbinical ser- vices, and to recognize Jewish hol- idays and maintain the Sinai name, which will be added at DMC's Huron Valley Hospital. Mr. Teger said people are im- pressed with Mr. Campbell's ef- forts and are upbeat about the fu- ture. "From what we see, [the merg- ed will only benefit the society with larger Sinai networks and more Jewish facilities. There is nothing parochial about his inter- ests. He enjoys a great deal of re- spect and we've heard nothing but good things about our decision to honor him." In response to the upcoming Chesed Award, Mr. Campbell said he sees the distinction as a posi- tive sign that the Jewish commu- nity will receive him warmly. "Hopefully they see our commit- ment to serve the Jewish commu- nity, including educational programs." Although the DMC already has such programs with other schools, Akiva will be the first Jewish school to gain from the DMC. Mr. Teger said the school may hold career and health days and introduce students to health care professions via DMC. ❑ THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN MICHIGAN rience the luxury of owning a Kohler 3.5 gal. toilet These superior flushing toilets are available in select areas only, in this case, two short blocks from the tunnel exit in down- town Windsor.
