Skater Wins
State Meet

Elyse Sklar, a 12-year:old ice
speedskater from Farmington
Hills, won the state short-track
championship for juvenile girls
(ages 12-13).
In competition March 1 at the
Midland Civic Arena, Sklar won
the 333- and 500-meter events
in personal record times of 38.0
seconds and 56.86. She took sec-
ond place in the 777 (a person-
al best 1:28.08) and in the 1,000.
In February, she finished
fourth at the Northbrook, Ill.,
Short Track Open, and won the
Motor City Super Skate II spon-
sored by her Wolverine Sports
Club at the Detroit Skating
Club.
On March 8, Sklar competed
in her first speedskating relay

meet. Her all-female, three-
member team finished third at
the Michigan Invitational Relays
in Grand Rapids.
Sklar is a seventh-grader at
Warner Middle School and at-
tends Hebrew school at Temple
Israel.

Gymnasts Soar
In Wolverine Meet

Oakland Gymnastics competitors
Jodie Rosenberg and Erin Kauf-
man placed well March 8-9 at the
Wolverine Classic meet at the
University of Michigan.
More than 300 gymnasts from
four states and Canada partici-
pated.
Rosenberg, 16, of West Bloom-
field competed in level 10 senior
division I and took second place
in three events: floor (9.375), -vault
(9.175), and beam (9.175), and
fourth all around (35.875).
Kaufman, 14, of Farmington
Hills competed in level 9 junior
division II. She placed first on
vault (8.825), fourth on bars (8.80)
and seventh all around (34.625).
