Ordained at the age of 53, she was trained as a lawyer and also was formerly a teacher of physically disabled children. Now she's ready and eager for the challenges of serving as rab- bi to a small congregation on a tropical island. Temple Beth Shalom's activ- ities have already expanded since the rabbi's arrival. Shab- /- bat services are now held on Sat- urday mornings as well as Friday evenings. She's also in- troduced monthly Havdalah ser- vices. Still another significant change is that the Reform con- gregation can now have its own conversions. "This is a big change," says Rabbi Friedman, H who has already officiated at eight conversions and who gets frequent calls from people on the island who are eager to start preparation for conversion. Because this is a tropical is- land, the rabbi selected a choice site for the ritual immersion that's part of conversion: a cove with a view of the sea and of El Morro, the looming fortress in Old San Juan which is a promi- nent landmark. The rabbi also wants to take advantage of Puerto Rico's nat- ural beauty as she plans new rit- uals for her congregants. For instance, she's thinking of a Rosh Chodesh ritual that will in- volve gathering near the At- lantic Ocean, which is such a dominant presence in San Juan. "I hope we can use the heal- ing powers of water to restore our sense of freshness and re- newal," she says. In other ways, too, Rabbi Friedman is expanding the ac- tivities of her congregation. Their drive to collect food for the needy of San Juan has been ex- panded to an ongoing food and clothing donation project. Mem- bership has increased since her arrival. Beth Shalom's young- sters are getting ready for an ex- citing visit to Washington, D.C., where they'll participate in a so- cial action conference sponsored by the Union of American He- brew Congregations. Although the New Jersey na- tive is enjoying the beauty of this lush tropical island and the nov- elty of an apartment with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and even the cruise ships in San Juan harbor, it's the ded- ication of her congregants that makes the strongest impression. "They're a remarkable, excit- ing, energetic and very caring congregation," says Rabbi Fried- man. And she's still marveling that it's now her congregation. "A year ago, I couldn't have imagined myself here," she mus- es. "And I still can't get over it. It's a wonderful gift, a very life- H affirming experience." ❑ INTRODUCING LASER HAIR REMOVAL A quick pain-fine alternative to electrolysis that removes unwanted hair.
