day, noon to 4 p.m., $6.95 ... A

The decor at Shalimar is plain
... with a wooden carving from
India on one wall ... and hand
paintings from India in the ban-
quet room ... Large brass plates
from India are on the dining
room walls.
There are 15 vegetarian en-
trees on the Shalimar menu ...
Eight chicken dishes, eight lamb
specialties, six fish preparations
and eight tandoori features.
This the same location of the
former Starboard Tack, East-
man's Landing, Darlin' Lilly's
and Armando's ... All had rea-
sonable success at the spot, and
Shalimar is carrying on the suc-
cessful tradition ... thus far last-
ing the longest.
Northern Indian dining is in-
teresting with a lot of satisfying
taste tinglers.

lems related to drug abuse,
troubled children, mental illness,
etc.
Money is garnered through
the sale of $10 raffle tickets that
can be bought at any Chuck
Muer restaurant in Michigan.
Everybody wins because with
each ticket purchased folks also
get $10 off on the price of a din-
ner for two at any Chuck Muer
restaurant.
The Salmon Stakes tourna-
ment is Saturday, April 26, at
Chuck Muer's River Crab
restaurant on River Road in St.
Clair.
It's a fun day for the entire
family, with salmon weigh-in
ceremonies at 1 p.m., live enter-
tainment in the parking lot, an

OFFICIAL ALL STAR Cafe,

Northwestern Highway, is un-

tional Inc.), which also owns
Planet Hollywood and the forth-
coming Marvel Mania, a joint

GIVING A TASTE test to the
new Haagen-Dazs low-fat ice
cream, recently introduced,
brought the same reaction from
five taster-helpers.
Different wording, but just
about the same meaning ... "It's
too good to be low fat."
The low-fat, OU kosher ice
cream seems to have retained
Haagen-Dazs' rich flavor and
creamy, full-bodied texture for
which it is noted.
Distributor Howard Green-
stein of Golden Valley Dairy in
Oak Park has the four flavors ...
vanilla, chocolate, strawberry
and coffee fudge ... none with ar-
tificial taste or coloring ... in most
supermarkets and convenience
stores.
It's interesting to note that the
low-fat ice cream has 1/3 fewer
calories and 80 percent less fat
than regular Haagen-Dazs ice
cream, yet practically tastes the
same.
Total fat content is 3 grams or
less, and calories from fat is 25,
with the total calories per serv-
ing (1/2 cup) being 170 ... Each
pint of low-fat Haagen-Dazs
gives four servings per contain-
er.
MORE PROOF of the need
for a kosher restaurant here is
the response being received by
Sperber's Kosher Catering at its
Tuesday evening kosher dinners
at the Jewish Community Cen-
ter on Maple and Drake roads.
The first night, March 11, was
an overwhelming sellout ... with
choices of three entrees in the
complete dinners under $10 ...
and a children's menu for ham-
burgers or hot dogs, French fries
and pop, around the $4 mark.
Alan Linker of Sperber's says
the large success may lead to
having the dinners on a second
evening as well.
CONGRATS ... to Lu Plotkin

GOOD TO SEE WDIV-TV
giving a list of the cleanest
restaurants around instead of
the dirtiest according to health
department scores, most of
which have absolutely nothing
to do with health.
They too are clean, but have
lower scores because of code vi-
olations (kitchen doors that don't
swing properly, broken tile, etc.).
More than 300 restaurants
had tallies of over 90.
I'd still like to see ratings in
two separate categories ... health
violations and code violations. ❑
