When Rabbi Al Lewis of Tem-
ple Emanuel and Rabbi Krishef
met in Grand Rapids with the
center's field director in early
March, they were told the pre-
vention program would proba-
bly be dropped. But the rabbis
fear the program might be rein-
troduced in the future. "We de-
cided we can't sign onto
something when we're not sure
where it's going," said Rabbi
Lewis.
Even if the center drops the
prevention program and focus-
es solely on promoting the 1995
guidelines, Mr. Stern questions
the need for a full campaign and
disagrees with Mr. Gersten's
claim that the guidelines have
been ineffective. "We hear on
both the right and left that when
they bring [the 1995 guidelines]
to the attention of school offi-
cials, problems are resolved,"
said Mr. Stern, one of the orig-
inal drafters of the guidelines.
He stated that the AJCongress
has reprinted thousands of
copies and receives frequent re-
quests for them.
Michael Lieberman, legal
counsel for the Anti-Defamation
League, also served on the draft-
ing committee of the 1995 guide-
lines and expressed concern that
while promoting awareness of a "second stage" of trying to
the guidelines was "laudable," build on the guidelines.
the center's campaign involves
and other Jewish organizations •
will vigorously oppose," he said.
Mr. Lieberman was not certain
if and when stage two of the
center's campaign would be.--
launched, but stated that he
had heard the prevention pro-
gram might be dropped.
According to Mr. Gersten,
despite the cool reception from
Rabbis Lewis and Krishef, the
center will go forward with its
plan to launch the campaign in
Grand Rapids. He expressed
confidence that even "if there's
no support from the rabbis,
we'll have no trouble getting
support from other leaders in
the Jewish community."
Founded in 1996 by Ortho-
dox Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, the
Center for Jewish and Christ-
ian Values works to protect re-
ligious expression in public
schools, Mr. Gersten said:
According to Mr. Stern, the
center serves a primarily evan-
gelical Christian clientele and,
with a few exceptions, almost
all the Jews on the center's
board "are associated with the
political right within the Jew-
ish community, and that's not
the primary thrust of Ameri-
can Jewish life." ❑
