For dieters, the percentage of Daily Values for fat are especially important. If the percent of Dai- ly Values are 5 or less, the food is considered low in that nutri- ent. A slice of wheat bread con- tains only 2 percent of the Daily Value of fat so it makes a good choice. "This gives some flexibility to dieters who may occasionally se- lect a higher-fat item such as a cookie or piece of pound cake that has about 15 percent of the Dai- ly Value for fat," says Ms. Apfel- blat. "But then they should monitor the other foods they eat that day and try not to go over 100 percent of the Daily Value for fat." She also recommends staying away from saturated fats like butter and ranch dressing and limiting the trans fats found in hydrogenated products like mar- garine, processed baked goods, hydrogenated vegetable oils, co- coa butter, coconut and palm oils and beef fat. Even with all the information provided for healthier eating, it's /-- still a good idea to remain alert. In a recent issue of Health Letter published by the Public Citizen's Health Research Group, a con- sumer alert warned about the la- bel on the Cool Whip which read Fat Free Whipped Topping. Un- der ingredients, the third among a dozen was hydrogenated veg- etable oil (coconut and palm ker- \ nel oil), indicating that these fats to be avoided were the third largest element of the product. However, Kraft Foods could call the product fat free and show 0 calories from fat if a serving contains a half-gram or less of fat and the Cool Whip label showed the serving size as two table- spoons. That's not going to be much topping on your berries but the label isn't false. The lesson: If you want to know what you're eating, read the label carefully, front and back. What's more, some foods are exempt. Foods that contain in- significant calories and nutrients, such as spices, don't need a label. Neither do items sold in pack- ages less than 4 square inches or that are irregularly shaped. ❑ pan e you.
