ongregation Shaare Saturch elsewhere. How ironic. Pharaoh \—) had offered Moshe the same deal — let your males leave but we want your families and your pos- sessions to remain behind. The deal that Moshe flatly refused was joyously proposed by a later generation. So the land was lost and the people were sent into the Baby- lonian exile. The biblical vision of the bond between land and people was about to end. But not quite. Whoever edited the final version of the Hebrew Bible chose carefully its last words. True, the people had for- feited the land, but God remained loyal to the divine covenant. A new ruler was to rise. Unlike Pharaoh, this ruler was to facili- tate the return of the Jewish peo- ple to their land. And so the Bible ends with the decree of Cyrus: "The Lord your God be with you and go up (to the land)." The last words of the last biblical book en- hances the theme already found in the last words of the first five books. DI 22, 414 r:g4lOr 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 pan. 'ftaremOrr.
