I love to read home design maga-
zines. I mentally walk around in
the lovely rooms, deciding just
which priceless antique break-
front or breathtaking modern
sculpture I'd like to have. This is
not a relevant decision (the rele-
vant decision is whether to re-roof
or just patch), but it is tremen-
dously entertaining.
I have wondered how this read-
ing material fits my actual life, as
the knowledgeable prose de-
scribes $300-per-square-foot fab-
ric. My idea of investing in a
special fabric is buying an extra
matching twin flat sheet to make
a curtain.
Then there's the description of
a "simple renovation" where the
homeowners took out a few walls
to combine three small bedrooms
into a media room. Now, my 7-
year-old son would be thrilled to
have permission to knock down a
few walls, but if I contributed
three bedrooms, the kids would
have to move to a motel.
Just take a sentence from a re-
cent, extremely serious, beautiful
and elegant design magazine:
"The time warp is deceptive: Close
examination of the artifacts re-
veals that a number of modernist
pieces from the 1940s through the
1990s have been adroitly com-
bined with those with 18th- and
19th-century pedigrees."
Allow me to rephrase that
statement so that it reflects our
house.
"The time warp is deceptive:
Close examination of the artwork
reveals that a number of water-
color Noah's Ark motif pieces cre-
ated in the second- and
third-grade have been adroitly
combined with those with a
kindergarten fingerpainting pedi-
gree."
When the magazine speaks of
a home owner who wanted "the
feeling of being in Rome," I just
want the feeling of being tidy
enough to be in polite society.
