And there you see the tragic and pathetic result of our sense of victimization. Anyway, about three hours af- ter the traffic accident and sever- al blocks away, a group of black youths came upon 29-year-old Yanke1R,osenbaum, a rabbinical scholar visiting from Australia. Mr. Rosenbaum had nothing to do with the accident. In fact, he probably didn't even know it had occurred. But Mr. Rosenbaum looked Jewish. He had the full beard and he wore the somber clothing of an Orthodox Jew. So someone yelled, "Get the Jew!" And he was stabbed to death. We often become so fixated on our own rights that we trample heedlessly. SPRING! SUMMER! FALL! SUITS from VESTIMENTA Police arrested Lemrick Nel- son, 16, and charged him with murder. He was acquitted of crim- inal charges in 1992, but pressure from New York's Jewish com- munity led to Nelson's being charged with violating Mr. Rosen- baum's civil rights in 1994. An- other man, Charles Price, 43, also was charged with civil rights vi- olations. Price was captured on videotape inciting blacks to "get Jews." A federal jury of five whites (including two who are Jewish), three blacks and four Hispan- ics convicted Nelson and Price on those charges recently. They face up to 20 years in prison. David N. Dinkins, New York City's first African-American mayor, was severely criticized for his handling of the incident by nearly everyone. The fragile coalition that put him into office splintered and so New York now has a white Republican in City Hall: a man who might be con- sidered Mr. Dinkins' exact op- posite. Thus, the black community's self-indulgent wish to think itself powerless became a self-fulfilling prophecy. But let's be candid: Too many of us are slow to condemn big- oted statements aimed at other ethnic groups, including Kore- ans, Jews, and even white Amer- icans. So, in Crown Heights, Cha- sidic Jews pushed for federal prosecution of two black men un- der the same civil rights laws . that were used to protect us against the excesses of the deep South; the same laws used to seek justice against the white Los Angeles police officers who beat up Rodney King. A case of our own laws used against us? The civil rights laws are meant to provide justice for everyone, not just us. ❑ CORNELIANI LUBIAM TROUSERS $395 SPORTCOATS from SPORTCOATS from $295 SPORTCOATS from SPORTCOATS from $395 $250 % OFF!!
