A Round Of Golf, Little-Kid Style

ERICA MEYER RAUZIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

M

y parents have two
grandsons, my little boy,
who just turned 7, and
my nephew, who is al-
most 6. Neither of them have hit
the links yet, but they are coming
close. During the nephew's last
visit he got us all involved in his
latest passion: miniature golf. This
kid is a whiz. He addresses the
ball; he holds the club properly; he
lines up his putts, and he sinks
`em. Amazing. A basically earnest
little guy, he is particularly seri-
ous about golf As he should be, no
doubt.
My son hadn't played miniature
golf more than two or three times
until this visit from Arnold Palmer
Jr. But, for the moment, it seized
his attention. When his birthday
came along two weeks later, he
decided that for his party he want-
ed to take his friends to play
miniature golf.
That's how it happened that

last Friday my husband and I took
eight 6-and-7-year-old boys, all
sporting yarmulkes and overly
confident attitudes, to play minia-
ture golf We loaded them up with
pizza before we left home,
promised them birthday cake
upon our return, and set out, two
cars full of eager confidence.
I don't know what my hus-
band's passengers talked about on
the way to the course, but my car-
full of little guys discussed their
personal favorites in the category
of things that are disgusting. In-
cluded on their list (which I will
spare you, by and large) was their
total bewilderment that men and
women in movies, such as Speed
and Aladdin (wherein they did
not differentiate at all between
people who are people and people
who are drawings), seem to kiss
with their mouths open. "I think
they lick each other's tongues," one
little boy opined to a chorus of ap-

preciative gagging noises.
I figured the day could only im-
prove after that. I should have
been so lucky. By the time each
boy selected his personal golf ball
color (leaving me and my husband
with bright pink and pale pink—
yuck, girl colors), and his person-
al golf club, we were already worn
out. Then, we played 36 holes on
the fortunately deserted course.
Our party tended to string out
over three holes at a time, so my
husband and I took turns leading
and following. Our primary ob-
jective was to make sure they
didn't brain each other with their
clubs. We had not realized that in
equipping each child to play golf-
we had armed them individually
with blunt instruments.
We must have repeated the
mantra, "Stand back while he
swings," 10 dozen times. Because,
putting or not, they all swung the
club like Chi Chi Rodriguez. 11]
