Jewry's Role in
Human Advancement

The flowering of American architectural genius during
past decades has also been nurtured by talented Jews
following in the footsteps of Albert Kahn, an influential
early shaper of our country's and the world's structures
and skylines. Meet him as well as a typical contemporary
who embodies vision and reverence in his art.

Albert Kahn (1869-1942) was hailed as the
"father of modern factory design." By mid-career, the
German-born son of a rabbi had translated industrial
architecture into a revolutionary art form. His legacy is
dramatically revealed in Detroit. Pioneering the use of
reinforced concrete, he created enormous complexes for
the Ford Motor Company as well as plants for Chrysler
and General Motors. Combining dignified simplicity
with utility, and workspace comfort with economy, his
design standards have been adopted everywhere the world
works.
More than 2,000 industrial buildings with his
imprint were erected globally, in addition to hospitals,
office towers, university buildings and synagogues in
urban Michigan. The master builder was also retained by
Russia in 1929 to rapidly industrialize the nation by
building over 500 factories in two years.

BAIS MOSHE DOWNTOWN
SYNAGOGUE

Moshe Safdie, a gifted Israeli architect has
created a living monument in Los Angeles, a permanent
exhibition tracing 4,000 years of Jewish history. Opened
in April 1996 after fifteen years in planning, the $65-
million Skirball Cultural Center & Museum also
celebrates in large measure the awesome talent of 20th
Century Jews. The compelling architectural gem
resembles an encampment within a fifteen acre oasis--
aesthetically capturing the historical truth of the Jews as
the first people to imagine paradise on earth.
Within its galleries is one of the world's largest
collections of art and artifacts relating to Judaism and
American life. Safdie has succeeded in creating a unique
environment in stone, steel and glass that merges the
relevance of culture and religion into architectural design.
He is one of many other Jewish successors to Albert
Kahn's rich heritage.
