Some of the statements in
your article on kashrut and
cleanliness ("Cleanliness Next
To Godliness?" Feb. 21) created
the erroneous impression
that the two are not inherently
linked.
In fact, finding a roach in
a "kosher" roll is not only
disgusting and a health hazard
but is also a violation of the most
elemental Jewish dietary
laws, which prohibit ingestion
of insects and vermin among
other animals. Such revelations
are akin to learning that a
kosher bakery used lard in
its products, except for the issue
of intent. Hopefully, all kosher
institutions and inspectors
will find a way to adhere to high-
er sanitary standards in the fu-
ture.
I also want to clarify another
matter: the oft-repeated claim
that Conservative Jews do not
support kosher restaurants. Dur-
ing my three years in Detroit,
I have regularly eaten at Sara's
and then Classic Coney Island,
where I always ran into my
congregants and colleagues. If
a kosher restaurant were
located in a neighborhood where
more Conservative Jews live
and work, I am confident that
it would receive strong support
from our community.

Give Danto
A Chance

I am writing in regard to the ar-
ticle about the new Danto Health
Care facility ("A Mixed Bill Of
Health" Feb. 21). It seems to me
that with every new endeavor,
there is bound to be an initial pe-
riod where the wrinkles need to
be worked out.
My father is currently a resi-
dent at Danto. I have found
the staff to be very respectful
and caring about his health
care needs. I am confident
that the new facility will contin-
ue to grow and improve over
time.
