raig Horowitz never
dreamed he'd grow up to
be a potato — let alone
count it among his proud-
est accomplishments.
The 26-year-old Washington,
D.C., native has a latke to be
proud of these days: He's been se-
lected to portray Mr. Potato Head
in Walt Disney's World on Ice
production of Toy Story.
And, he's a newlywed. No, his
bride is not Mrs. Potato Head; he
wooed and won one Lisa Cor-
nelius — a.k.a. Bo Peep. She also
skates a principal role in the Toy
Story extravaganza.
'We met [when we were both
in] Beauty and the Beast," explains
Horowitz. "I played the Beast, and
she was understudy for Belle.
"It's fun to be in the show to-
gether, because she, as Bo Peep,
is the peacekeeper, and I'm the
foil.
It's Mr. Potato Head's foilish-
ness that particularly endears
him to Horowitz. Besides the
skating skill required to play any
character in a World on Ice show,
the potato "requires a lot of en-
ergy to bring him to life, because
he's just a big, uh, potato."

Horowitz has portrayed hulking
figures, including Beast, in oth-
er World on Ice features.
"Being able to animate these
big guys, getting into the char-
acter that I am playing and
bringing them to life," he says,
"takes a lot of getting to know the
crowd and what they expect.
"I never had aspirations to be
Mr. Potato Head, but now, peo-
ple really take to it. They say
Wow, that must be so cool.' The
reception that [Mr. Potato Head]
gets is amazing."
Horowitz, who has been skat-
ing since he went on a family va-
cation when he was 5, has other
aspirations for his future. "I want
to be a physical therapist," he
says. "Either that or a chef."
However, he adds, "no potatoes
au gratin for me." ❑

Walt Disney's World on Ice —
Toy Story will be performed 7:30
p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, Fri-
day; 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thurs-
day; 11:30 a.m., 3:30 and 7:30
p.m. Saturday; 1 and 5 p.m. Sun-
day, March 4-9. $11.50, $14.50,
$17.50. Joe Louis Arena, Detroit.
